WARNING: Handling passenger or off-highway motor vehicle parts can expose you to chemicals such as phthalates and lead, which can cause cancer and reproductive harm. To minimize exposure, service the vehicle in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and wash your hands. For more information see www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/motor-vehicle-parts.
What Proposition 65 is
California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, known as Proposition 65, requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposures to chemicals on a list the state maintains. The list has about 900 entries. A warning does not mean a product breaks any safety standard. It means the product can expose you to a listed chemical.
Why vehicle parts carry warnings
Listed chemicals turn up in ordinary automotive materials: lead in some brass fittings and solder, phthalates in some flexible plastics and wire insulation, and others in coatings and rubber. California wrote the warning above for parts for passenger and off-highway vehicles, and it took effect in 2025.

- From the manufacturer, on the product or its packaging, when it supplies a warning of its own.
Sensible handling
Work in a ventilated area, wear gloves, and wash your hands after handling parts. Do not eat, drink or smoke while you work on a vehicle.
